People were amazed by the new keyboard design of the technology company Acer on one of its products. One customer thought the new feature was a design flaw and returned it for a replacement, while others labeled it “stupid.”
The company has added mirrored R and E keys to the keyboard of its Acer Vero laptops. But the move, which aims to remind people of environmental friendliness, has left many unhappy. And one poster on social network X, formerly Twitter, called the design ‘terrible’.
One man thought the design was actually a mistake and returned it only to be sent an identical replacement. The team wrote on Facebook: “Looks like @Costco bought a batch of @Acer laptops with keyboards that aren’t quite right. Took 3 weeks to get this replacement and it’s the exact same mirror issue as the first one. So much for quality control. I’m not sure my OCD can handle this.
But he had to go back to update his post after it was pointed out that it wasn’t a bug, but an intentional design feature. Thanking those who pointed out the error, he said: “B***d stupid in my opinion. Now I have to convince my CSO.”
Adrian went to X after buying a replacement device when his laptop broke. said: “Laptop sputtered today so I bought a new one. I opened it up to see this. What a stupid thing to do with the keyboard and I wonder how it affects those with accessibility issues? Whoever came up with this brand f*** ** *s should not renew the ER contract.”
Others agreed. Nigel joked: “I’d like to return this and get a seat please. Come on, write an email.” While Dave commented, “Simply install a small mirror right above your keyboard when you need to look at those keys.”
And posting on X, Caspar wrote: “That’s horrible! It’s really bothering me. Why can’t the R just be green?”
Acer provided an explanation for the design. It says on its website: “Acer Vero products are designed with sustainability in mind.
“The R and E keys represent the ‘Re’ in Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. To reinforce this message, Vero products have a keyboard with mirrored R and E keys that are yellow instead of white.”
But Tim still wasn’t convinced. He said: “It still doesn’t make sense to me why this seems like an appropriate way to send their message.”
