Do You Care About 60fps on PS5?

Two new PS5 games caused quite a stir this week. Plague Story: Requiem and Gotham Knights committed the ultimate sin of not hitting 60fps on Sony’s current-gen console. As far as we’re concerned, they’re both good games – Requiem is a real treat, according to our review – but that hasn’t stopped people from stirring up the old frame rate debate.

The reality of the situation is that we’re pretty used to the PS5’s 60fps mode by now most titles. This allows the action to flow much more smoothly than what we were used to in previous generations, when console games were generally limited to 30 frames per second.

Fans of action and fighting games will tell you how important a high and consistent frame rate is. 60 frames per second doesn’t just look smoother — it makes for better gameplay, as animations can be read better and button inputs can be registered with greater ease.

But with A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights skipping last-gen machines like the PS4, people are wondering if this is a sign of what’s to come on the PS5. Are we already moving away from 60fps on consoles?

Frankly, we are not convinced of either. What many observers miss here is that both A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights are poorly optimized releases — they have problems on all platforms, including PC, where even high-end rigs struggle to run them smoothly. It’s little more than a coincidence that they launched around the same time and are now making PS5 users wonder if their system will continue to offer higher framerate mods in the future.
